Frequently Asked Quesitons
General Information
Do you offer “smart” blinds, curtains or shades that work with Siri, Google Home, or Alexa?
Yes! Many of our products are able to integrate seamlessly with a variety of home automation systems. Your window coverings can open and close on a timer, adjust the amount of light in the room for different moods, and much more.
What kind of warranty is included with Hunter Douglas blinds and shades?
All Hunter Douglas products are covered by a limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own them. Defects in fabrics, materials, and workmanship are always 100% covered. Pull cords are covered for 7 years after purchase and motorized components are covered for 5 years.
Where are your blinds, curtains, and shades made?
Our Hunter Douglas blinds and shades are made in the United States. Our custom curtains are designed and sewn in our local Portland workroom.
Are your window treatments child-safe?
Many of our Hunter Douglas products (as well as custom-designed draperies) are available with child-safe options.
Product Recommendations
I’m interested in motorized shades. What do you recommend?
Most Hunter Douglas products can be motorized to some extent. In determining what works best for our clients we access their home and lifestyle. Only then can we make qualified recommendation.
I need a wind covering to help with heat control?
Are there other options in addition to Duette® Architella? There are several options that work for heat control such as Vignette® Roman Shades, certain Designer Screen Shades, Solera® and now Sonnette™ Cellular Roller Shades.
Are Duette® Honeycomb shades your only Top Down Bottom Up shades?
No other Top Down Bottom Up shades include Vignette® Roman Shades, Provenance® Woven Wood shades, and Solera®.
Our TV faces the window and gets a lot of glare on the screen. Do we need blackout shades?
Blackout shades are very effective in reducing glare on television screens. There are two products that provide blackout in addition to light filtering – Dual Designer Roller shades and Silhouette Duolite® and A Deux®.
My house has a great view but it gets hot during the afternoon! Are there shades that can maintain my view but help control the heat, too?
Yes, the Designer Screen shade light has recently added two fabrics from its Contract Line® that have been specifically engineered to help with heat control while allowing for considerable view through.
What are my options for UV protection on my large picture window?
Nearly the entire line can help with UV protection but to recommend a specific product, we need to review the space to determine which would be the best fit.
Installation Process
From start to finish how long will installation take?
This greatly depends on the product being installed, how many windows and whether there are existing shades that must be removed.
Can I measure my windows myself?
We do not recommend measuring the windows yourself. Each Hunter Douglas product has its own set of intricacies that must be taken into consideration when measuring for them. Measurements for a Silhouette® for example do not translate well for a Duette®.
I’m pretty handy. Can I install these shades myself?
Possibly, however the warranty no longer covers the product if not installed by Hunter Douglas certified installers. In addition, there are sometimes minor tweaks to the product that only experienced Hunter Douglas installers are aware of.
Why do I need lining and interlining?
Lining and interlining maintains the integrity of the drapery resulting in luxurious folds and draping. In addition, it protects from sunlight and adds longevity to the drape.
Can I use my existing rods?
We do not recommend using existing rods. Every drapery project requires the appropriate hardware to safeguard against falling out of the wall and ease of use. Oftentimes existing hardware is erroneously placed and sized incorrectly.
